Protecting yourself during a shooting event

Matthew Maasdam, a former Navy SEAL and chief executive of Move2Safety, offers training to mitigate danger from “active shooter” incidents. He joined Nia Malika Henderson on PostTV's On Background. Watch his full interview and check out his tips for reacting to an active shooter:

Move to safety
Move as fast as you can away from the threat. An active shooter hits a moving target a small percentage of the time at close range.

Look for an exit
Look for any exit to get out of the line of fire, including emergency exits, windows and doors not typically used as entry and exit points.

Take cover, stay low
If there are chairs or anything else low in the room, duck to that height and stay behind it. Scramble on all fours to lower your profile.

Stay sharp
Realize the possibility that you can be shot and think through how you will react to the situation.
