Beyer Speed Figures (BSF) explained

Beyer: Most Derby finishers won't run on two weeks' rest
Horse Andrew Beyer's Analysis Odds

1. Dynamic Impact

Trainer: Mark Casse
Jockey: Miguel Mena
His win in the Illinois Derby didn't qualify him for the Kentucky Derby field, but it was a good effort, with a speed figure better than California Chrome earned at Churchill Downs.

12-1

BSF: 102

2. General a Rod

Trainer: Mike Maker
Jockey: Javier Castellano
After good races in Florida this winter, fast colt got buried in the middle of the pack at Churchill Downs and never had a chance to run. He's better than his 11th-place finish suggests.

15-1

BSF: 101

3. California Chrome

Trainer: Art Sherman
Jockey: Victor Espinoza
The Derby was his fifth straight decisive win. He has speed and he's tractable. His down-to-earth owners and trainer endear him to fans. What's not to like? His slow time at Churchill was his first sign of vulnerability.

3-5

BSF: 108

4. Ring Weekend

Trainer: Graham Motion
Jockey: Alan Garcia
Motion won the 2011 Derby with Animal Kingdom, and racing fans learned to respect almost every horse he runs. This one is an exception. His lone stakes win came with a perfect trip against a weak field in the Tampa Bay Derby.

20-1

BSF: 95

5. Bayern

Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: Rosie Napravnik
Baffert seeks his sixth Preakness victory, but his entrant is less accomplished than any of his previous five winners. The quick colt has never won a race longer than one mile, and his stamina may be suspect.

10-1

BSF: 98

6. Ria Antonia

Trainer: Tom Amoss
Jockey: Calvin Borel
Owner Ron Paolucci has changed trainers for the second time this year, and Amoss will saddle this filly for an unrealistic start in the Preakness. Paolucci reasons: "There's going to be a lot of speed, and it could really set up for her."

30-1

BSF: 85

7. Kid Cruz

Trainer: Linda Rice
Jockey: Julian Pimentel
Ex-claiming horse isn't good enough, but his recent stakes victory at Pimlico was a nice one. He should have been hampered by a very slow pace in front of him, yet he rallied powerfully to score by 3 1/2 lengths.

20-1

BSF: 91

8. Social Inclusion

Trainer: Manuel Azpurua
Jockey: Luis Contreras
An exceptional race in Florida indicated that he might be as good as any member of his generation. But he's made only three career starts -- the most recent of them six weeks ago -- and looks ill-prepared for a race as demanding as the Preakness.

5-1

BSF: 110

9. Pablo Del Monte

Trainer: Wesley Ward
Jockey: Jeffrey Sanchez
Speedster is out of his element here. He has done his best running on synthetic surfaces, and he have to knock heads with several other fast rivals at Pimlico.

20-1

BSF: 91

10. Ride on Curlin

Trainer: Billy Gowan
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Jockey Calvin Borel may be a Kentucky Derby legend, but Gowan criticized him and fired him for taking this colt back to 19th place and winding up wider than anybody else in the Churchill Downs stretch. He accelerated late and finished seventh.

10-1

BSF: 98

Note: BSF represents best speed figure earned at a mile or more.
