Neustar

Neustar orchestrates many behind-the-scenes operations that keep phone lines and Internet connections humming. For example, the company maintains the databases that allow calls to connect between different phone carriers. It also helps companies monitor and manage their Web sites’ traffic, security risks and IP geolocation, among other services. In October, the company paid $650 million for Vienna-based TARGUSinfo, which provides real-time caller identification services for telecommunications companies.

Trivia

In 2003, Neustar helped make it possible for people in much of North America to keep their cell phone numbers when they switched carriers.
