Wal-Mart is homing in on the District, where it plans to open six stores in coming years as part of an aggressive push to expand its presence in urban areas. The company has had a bumpy year, in part because of stiff competition from discount chains such as Dollar Tree and Dollar General. In October, Wal-Mart reintroduced its holiday layaway program for toys and electronics, which it originally eliminated five years ago, in hopes of cashing in on holiday shoppers.

Walmart serves customers more than 200 million times per week at more than 9,884 stores under 60 different banners in 28 countries.
