5. Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp.

The organization provides grants and training services to hundreds of housing and community development groups in every state. This year brings an end to a $5 million, two-year partnership with the Citi Foundation to help nonprofits provide expanded financial counseling and services to low-income individuals. But the group is also in the midst of a long-term project with Wells Fargo to help stabilize neighborhoods affected by the lingering national foreclosure crisis.

The group’s origins date back to a resident-led campaign for better housing in Pittsburgh, Pa.
