Gun Control

Issue Position |

Obama has generally been cautious on the issue of gun control as a candidate and as president. He told voters In September 2008, “I’m not going to take away your guns.” The Web site for his 2008 campaign said he supports “making guns in this country childproof” and making the assault-weapons ban permanent, according to FactCheck.org.

The National Rifle Association has charged Obama with being anti-gun. The group cited a 1999 article in the Chicago Defender, a newspaper, that said the then-Illinois state senator supported a “500 percent” increase in the federal tax on the sale of “weapons he says are most commonly used in firearm deaths,” though it’s unclear what weapons that referred to. In the Senate, Obama supported an unsuccessful amendment by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) that would have expanded the definition of armor-piercing ammunition; Kennedy said the measure would “not apply to ammunition that is now routinely used in hunting rifles,” though the NRA contested that point.

After the deadly July movie-theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., Obama promised to lead a national discussion about gun control, saying he thinks many gun owners would agree that “AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers,” not civilians. He blamed Congress for not acting on restrictions that he said would keep guns out of criminals’ hands and said current laws should be better enforced.

Obama's Statements (6)

May 22, 2010
For many years, our focus was on Iraq.  And year after year, our troops faced a set of challenges there that were as daunting as they were complex.  A lesser Army might have seen its spirit broken.  But the American military is more resilient than that.  Our troops adapted, they persisted, they partnered with coalition and Iraqi counterparts, and through their competence and creativity and courage, we are poised to end our combat mission in Iraq this summer.
Request a Fact Check
March 22, 2011
And obviously there are always risks involved in this kind of operation, but for us to be able to structure something where we bring our unique capabilities to bear to fulfill a mission that is supported by the international community against somebody who was about to direct his armed forces against his people in the most vicious of ways is something that I think the American people, and certainly our American military, should be proud of.
Request a Fact Check
December 14, 2011
As your Commander-in-Chief, I can tell you that it will indeed be a part of history.  Those last American troops will move south on desert sands, and then they will cross the border out of Iraq with their heads held high.  One of the most extraordinary chapters in the history of the American military will come to an end.  Iraq’s future will be in the hands of its people.  America’s war in Iraq will be over.
Request a Fact Check
July 25, 2012
But what I said in the wake of Tucson was we were going to stay on this, persistently.  So we’ve been able to take some actions on our own, recognizing that it’s not always easy to get things through Congress these days.  The background checks conducted on those looking to purchase firearms are now more thorough and more complete.  Instead of just throwing more money at the problem of violence, the federal government is now in the trenches with communities and schools and law enforcement and faith-based institutions, with outstanding mayors like Mayor Nutter and Mayor Landrieu -- recognizing that we are stronger when we work together.
Request a Fact Check
July 25, 2012
But even though we’ve taken these actions, they’re not enough.  Other steps to reduce violence have been met with opposition in Congress.  This has been true for some time -- particularly when it touches on the issues of guns.  And I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms.  And we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation -– that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage.
Request a Fact Check
July 25, 2012
So I’m going to continue to work with members of both parties, and with religious groups and with civic organizations, to arrive at a consensus around violence reduction -- not just of gun violence, but violence at every level, on every step, looking at everything we can do to reduce violence and keep our children safe -– from improving mental health services for troubled youth  -- to instituting more effective community policing strategies.  We should leave no stone unturned, and recognize that we have no greater mission as a country than keeping our young people safe.

Issue Position |

After supporting measures during his run for Senate in 1994 that he said weren’t “going to make me the hero of the NRA,” Romney joined the group in 2006. In 2007, he said that as president, he would have signed an assault-weapons ban if the bill came to his desk. A few months later, he said he didn’t “support any gun control legislation.”

He said, “The effort for a new assault weapons ban, with a ban on semi-automatic weapons, is something I would oppose.”

In April, the former Massachusetts governor addressed the NRA, telling them he would defend gun rights as president. “We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners. President Obama has not; I will,” he said. “We need a president who will stand up for the rights of hunters, and sportsmen, and those seeking to protect their homes and their families. President Obama has not; I will.”

After the July shooting in a Colorado movie theater, Romney called tightening gun-ownership restrictions “misguided,” saying the United States has “a lot of gun laws now” that don’t stop violence.

March 6, 2012
I have seen Israel by land and by air. I have seen its narrow waist, and its vulnerability to positions on the Golan Heights. I have spent time with families in Sderot who have been terrorized by rocket barrages from Gaza. I have walked the streets of Jerusalem, seen schools pocked by rifle rounds fired from the foreboding hills that nearly surround it.
